My first week
Hello!
So, a quick introduction. I’m Kelsey and I’m in my third year of studying Communication Design at Gray’s School of Art. I’m undergoing a six-week placement here at FortyTwo - so you may hear a lot more from me.
Being asked to write a blog wasn’t something I expected, I’m not much of a blogger and I don’t exactly ‘have a way with words’… so apologies in advance. I was kindly asked not to slag them off so I will try my best to refrain from doing so (only kidding, they’re lovely people really).
Having only been here one week I'm still adapting to studio life, but it is certainly far from boring (they have Chinese for lunch on Fridays- yus). It’s exciting to be thrown into working for clients, but also a bit daunting as you need to make the client happy - you aren’t just designing for yourself anymore. It can be tricky to ignore your own design instincts and the style you are used to working in where needed, although this is something I will get used to with practice and something that is essential for being a designer.
I have been helping out with some packaging design, advertising and identity projects for clients including The Teasmith and Duncan and Todd Opticians. One project I’m really looking forward to is photographing the studio on my 35mm film camera and then creating a little zine about studio life. You really wouldn’t expect to find a design agency like FortyTwo in Aberdeen, with its art gallery like studio and work that is both aesthetically pleasing yet practical, it was something I really wanted to be a part of.
I’m excited to see what work I will create and the things I will learn here, along with what else will be in store for the rest of my placement...
