A fond farewell
So that’s it, my placement is sadly coming to an end. It is going to be a struggle to walk out the door on Friday knowing I won’t be returning on Monday. I have had such a good time here at FortyTwo, it really has been an invaluable experience and one I will remember fondly.
What have I learned whilst I've been here?
I have learnt so much from this studio, vital things that will really help me in my development to becoming a skilled graphic designer (I will get there one day!). Before coming on placement I felt pretty clueless. I had no experience in seeing a live project from start to finish, or the day to day running of a studio. I also had basic technical skills I was keen to improve on, to take my work closer to being of professional quality. Getting to work on projects alongside skilled designers and being able to ask questions whenever I was stuck has really helped me gain the skills I had hoped - although I still have a long way to go. To any other students considering placement, I can’t stress how important it is to undergo as many as you can. There are just some things you cannot learn within the classroom and it takes going out into the working world to gain the experience you need.
What do I hope to take from my placement?
I now have a long summer ahead for me where I hope to pick up some freelance work but after that I will be entering my final year of university where I will be able to put into practice and develop the skills I have gained here on placement. I now have more experience in taking a project from start to completion and how to communicate your ideas to clients along the way, as well as more knowledge in design principles. It has also been good to meet more people in the industry and to see how everyone works together, and we will hopefully all keep in touch!
Aside from all of this, I will miss Album Thursdays and Wok Wok Fridays. But mostly, I will miss everyone in the studio. I have spent a lot of time in awe of their talents, in all their different fields. They are a skilled bunch, and I feel very fortunate to have been able to spend my placement learning from them. I can guarantee that if you ever use FortyTwo for your project, you will be in safe hands (some shameless promotion- you’re welcome).
Bye bye FortyTwo, it’s been a blast!
